Detailed Workshop Program
The dance workshops are meant for dancers, professionals or amateurs, as well as musicians or any interested person.
Spanish dance of the Golden Age
Theme: JÁCARA with Noveli arms and CANARIOS
Work on the dance of the Spanish Golden Age described in the sources from the xvi to the xviii centuries, based in particular on the works of Esquivel, Jaque, González and Noveli.
Practice of the basic steps and arm movements, with or without castanets. Practice of the choreographic variations proposed in the mentioned sources. And finally, improvisation and composition exercises will be proposed, for a better understanding of the different dance types and their dynamics.
This August session of the Academy will be centered on the restitution of the Jácara, from the manuscripts Libro de danzar by Juan Antonio Jaque and Escuela por lo bajo by Domingo González. The novelty is that we will practice them with the arms notated by Noveli.
We will also practice some variations of Canarios, with stamping steps as we propose them, inspired by the Italian sources, the popular Mexican ones, as well as the flamenco ones.
The work concentrates on the dance technique, style, interpretation, castanets and, of course, on the relation between music and dance.
NB: If you do not have castanets but you wish to play them, it would be useful to get a pair.
Music for dance
Musicians wishing to work on interpretations of the dance pieces taught in this Academy are very much welcome, either singers or instrumentalists. They will follow the dance class in order to experience the movement in their own body, wich will instruct them of how to play those dance types and how to accompany the choreographies with art and knowledge. They can then play sometimes for the dancers.
In the Spanish dance style, as the choreographic sources do not provide music scores, there will be not only a work on tempo and correct dynamics for dancing, but also a structure elaborating work, depending on the type of dance and its choreographic needs.
You can play either with an early or a modern instrument.
